In both the excerpts from K ben train der zees apologue A private sorrow and in Gail Godwins short novel A bereft Woman, the plots reduce on ideas of sexual uniting and family. Karen van der zee presents marriage with children as correct and completely fulfilling; it is what Faye, the star of A cloistered Sorrow, wants and what is needed to her happiness. For Godwins unnamed protagonist, marriage and family are close to the antithesis of happiness; her inhabitancy life seems to suffocate read and lastly leads her to death.
